Now that the new 2012 NC Energy Code requires every duct system to be pressure tested, there’s a good business opportunity for folks that are willing to market themselves as duct-testers and form partnerships with HVAC contractors and builders.
Here are some of the most common questions we receive (and answers) about duct testing and the new 2012 NC Energy Code.
Q: Is this a new requirement on ALL new homes being built now.
A: Yes. The 2012 Energy Code requires that all systems in all new homes be tested. Section 403.2.2 discusses the duct sealing/testing requirements. You can view the 2012 Energy Code online by clicking here.
Q: Is their a list of companies that are providing this service already in my area.
A: There is not an official list of “duct-testers” posted anywhere. If you’d like to feel things out, it’d be wise to touch base with the heating/cooling contractors in your area, as well as the builders. See if they’d be interested in hiring you to perform the tests instead of doing it in-house.
Q: About how much is the start up cost for the equipment.
A: We train our students to use two brands of duct testing equipment: Retrotec and The Energy Conservatory are the manufacturers. Both manufacturers sell their equipment for under $2000.
