There are only a few days left to take advantage of the federal tax credit for energy efficient home improvement. All improvements must be installed before the end of 2010. This $1500 tax credit can be applied toward the expense of fireplaces, heating and cooling equipment, insulation, water heaters, and replacement windows.
The government allows you to take 30% of the cost and apply it toward the $1500 cap. For insulation and windows, the 30% only applies toward the cost of the materials – labor not included. Labor CAN be included for fireplaces, water heaters, and heating/cooling equipment which all have efficiency standards that must be met in order for the system to qualify.
